BWI Tolka & Wicklow Branch outing to Rogerstown Estuary / Turvey
Park and surrounding area as told by Brian Carruthers...
A cool 5°c bright & breezy (wind chill feeling 0°c) day for all
30+ members who ventured on the walk. Birds sighted @R&T by all
"who were in the right place at the right time ;-)"
Brent Geese, Shelduck, Wigeon, Mallard,
Gadwall (3 pair), Teal, Shoveler,
Red-breasted Merganser, Cormorant, Little Grebe,
Great Black-backed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull,
Herring Gull, Common Gull, Black-headed Gull,
Grey Heron, Little Egret, Coot & Moorhen
(@ Scrape), Water Rail, Oystercatcher, Lapwing,
Ringed Plover, Golden Plover, Dunlin,
Sanderling, Black-tailed Godwit, Curlew,
Greenshank, Redshank, Lesser Yellowlegs (north
hide), Kestrel (pair), Sparrowhawk (with kill),
Peregrine (female morning time & male at noon), Merlin
(fm x2), Buzzard (x3), Pheasant, Woodpigeon,
Collared Dove, Pied Wagtail, Robin,
Blackbird, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush,
Stonechat, Goldcrest, Wren, Blue Tit,
Coal Tit, Jackdaw, Rook, Raven
(harassing a Buzzard), Hooded Crow, Magpie,
Starling, House Sparrow, Reed Bunting, Goldfinch,
Chaffinch, Bullfinch, Greenfinch, and
Linnet. With additional sightings of Mute Swan,
Snipe, Goldeneye, and Scaup (2 pair) @Broadmeadow
Estuary, Swords. A great days viewing before the rain/hail
rolled in at 3pm." BC

This Dunlin appears to have got oil on its breast feathers as a
result of feeding in polluted mud.
Not in the best
shape, it was soon spotted by a Hooded Crow,
which chased it...
caught it...
and killed it.
